A PAM ANALYSIS OF LIVESTOCK POLICIES IN INDONESIA AgEcon
Rae, Allan N.; Kasryno, Faisal.
With the rapid increase in consumption of some livestock products in Indonesia, expansion of domestic production of these commodities may enhance smallholders' incomes, increase rural employment and add to the country's trade balance. Policy analysis matrices (PAMs) were constructed to estimate divergences between private and social costs and returns in poultry and pig production in selected regions of Indonesia. In each case, producers' use of capital was subsidized but feed input private costs exceeded social values, and output prices received by producers fell short of values based on world prices. Production of all products as import substitutes was socially profitable, but in many instances private returns to farmers were negative. Product price...

A phytosociological method for interpreting plankton data ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Ibanez, F.; Legendre, P..
Multivariate techniques allow data sets to be summarised, but are not deslgned to causally model ecological phenomena. The ambiguity of the interpretation results from the ambiguity of the scaling space. The phytosociological method proposed by Grandjouan (1982; These d'etat, Universite Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg) is a general interpretive framework allowing separate consideration of 3 distinct reference spaces. a geographical space to visualise the spatio-temporal distribution of the descriptors, an ecological space showing the effects of the environmental variables on the biological descriptors, and a bio-ethological space showing the statistically meaningful species cornmunities. It is thus possible to define the position of each biological category and...

A PORTFOLIO APPROACH TO LANDSCAPE PLANT PRODUCTION AND MARKETING AgEcon
Purcell, David L.; Turner, Steven C.; Houston, Jack E.; Hall, Charles R..
The ornamental horticultural industry continues to be one of the most rapidly expanding sectors in agriculture. This study examined a decision model for landscape plant production based on portfolio analysis. A quadratic programming model was developed to generate an optimal crop portfolio for a selected southeastern nursery. Empirical results indicate opportunities exist for modest diversification to offset income variability in landscape plant production and marketing.

A QUARTERLY ECONOMETRIC SIMULATION MODEL OF THE U.S. LIVESTOCK AND MEAT SECTOR AgEcon
Buhr, Brian L..
This paper develops a quarterly dynamic simulation model of the U.S. livestock sector which is useful for both policy analysis and technology assessment. The model includes a complete representation of the livestock and meat supply sector, processing or margin sector and meat demand. First the conceptual framework for the model is outlined. Second, the data used for the model is presented and, finally, the estimated and validation statistics of the model are presented.

A realizable force feedback-feedforward control loop for a piston wave absorber ArchiMer
Maisondieu, Christophe; Clément, Alain.
We consider the problem of the absorption of 2D water waves by the horizontal motions of a vertical plane in response to the hydrodynamical force it experiences. The solution of this problem is straightforward in the frequency domain. Unfortunately, the transposition of the frequency domain solution to the time domain by inverse Fourier transforming leads to a non-causal impulse response function. Thus it cannot be used just as it is, neither as a control loop for physical absorbing devices nor as a non radiating boundary condition (NRBC) in numerical modeling. In this paper, we propose a method to derive causal approximations of this ideal controller. Two time-domain absorbing relations are proposed, differing in whether or not one knows a dominant...

A redescription of Cumoniscus Bonnier, 1903 (Crustacea: Tantulocarida) from a cumacean host in the Bay of Biscay OMA
Huys, R.; Boxshall, G.; Casnova, J.-P..
Cumoniscus kruppi Bonnier, the only tantulocarid known from a cumacean host, is redescribed from a tantulus larva collected from the Bay of Biscay. The host is a male leuconid cumacean. This genus is placed in the family Deoterthridae, and can be distinguished from other genera by the pore pattern on the cephalic shield, the reduced setae on the sixth legs and the presence of tiny curved spinules on the endopod of thoracopods 2 to 5.

A Review of the Taxation of Property: Local Government Rates in Victoria 1 AgEcon
Johnson, David T..
The paper reviews the taxation of property in Victoria and in particular the method of raising revenue for local government from rural landowners. A major contradiction between the apparent philosophical basis and its application is identified. A modification to the existing method of calculation is suggested based on the use value of rural land. The advantages and disadvantages of the use value modification are discussed and compared to the system of property taxes presently used. The use method system implies a changed incidence of tax on the three categories of taxpayer; farm, residential and commercial. The split between these categories for aggregations of local governments under the proposed situation and in the present situation is compared.

A revision of Cylinula and two new species of Cylindropsyllus (Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Cylindropsyllidae) OMA
Huys, R.; Willems, K..
Males of two new species of Cylindropsyllus Brady, 1880 (Cylindropsyllidae) are described. Cylindropsyllus ibericus sp. n. is based on a single specimen from Portugal previously misidentified as C. laevis Brady, 1880; C. govaerei sp. n. is reported from Corsican shell-gravel. The boreomediterranean distribution of C. laevis is confirmed and a key to the species of Cylindropsyllus is presented. Redescriptions are provided for the two species of Cylinula Coull, 1971, the type species C. proxima Coull, 1971 and C. arganoi Cottarelli and Venanzetti, 1989. The relationships of Cylindropsyllus, Cylinula and Evansula Sars, 1909 are briefly discussed.

A revision of Danielssenia Boeck and Psammis Sars with the establishment of two new genera Archisenia and Bathypsammis (Harpacticoida: Paranannopidae) OMA
Huys, R.; Gee, M..
Archisenia gen. nov. is proposed to accommodate the sibirica-group of the genus Danielssenia Boeck, 1872. Re-examination of Alaskan material of D. stefanssoni Willey, 1920 has shown the latter species to be a junior synonym of D. sibirica Sars, 1898, the type and only species of the new genus. Danielssenia robusta Sars, 1921 and Fladenia intermedia (Wells, 1965) are synonymous and consequently F. robusta comb. nov. becomes the type species of the genus Fladenia Gee & Huys, 1990. Danielssenia similis Chislenko, 1971 is regarded as species inquirenda and the genus Danielssenia is redefined from the type species D. typica Boeck, 1872, and two other species (D. quadriseta Gee, 1988 and D. reducta Gee, 1988). The status of D. fusiformis (Brady, 1880) nec...

A revision of the Malesian monotypic genus Cheilosa Bulme (Euphorbiaceae) Naturalis
Welzen, Peter C. van; Banka, Roy A.; Leoncito, Cecilia D..
The West Malesian genus Cheilosa Blume has been revised; the variability of the only species, C. montana Blume, will be described. Cheilosa montana combines the two former species C. montana and C. malayana (Hook. f.) Airy Shaw. Typical for Cheilosa are the presence of glands in the teeth of the leaves; thyrsoid, mainly unbranched, ramiflorous to terminal inflorescences; absence of petals; the presence of a disc; 9 or 10 stamens; 3- (rarely 4)-locular ovaries with one ovule per locule; thick-walled fruits; an aril around the seed; and endosperm. Fascicled hairs are usually present on the lower surface of the leaves, but are caducous. The excluded C. whiteana Croizat is provisionally transferred as a new species to Trigonostemon by Airy Shaw.

A revision of the polytypic Albinaria hippolyti (Boettger, 1878) from Crete (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Clausiliidae) Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M.; Welter-Schultes, F.W.; Wiese, V..
On the basis of both detailed distributional field studies and morphological analyses, a revision of the polytypic species Albinaria hippolyti from Central and Eastern Crete is presented. True subspecies are distinguished from mere geographic varieties by the presence of narrow hybrid zones. Using this criterion, four adjoining subspecies are recognised: A. h. hippolyti (Boettger, 1878), A. h. aphrodite (Boettger, 1883), A. h. holtzi (Sturany, 1904) and A. h. harmonia subspec. nov. Additionally, two geographically isolated and conchologically distinctive forms are also treated as subspecies: A. h. arthuriana (Boettger, 1878) and A. h. asterousea subspec. nov. The geographical distribution and variability of each subspecies is described in detail. A. h....

A sampling strategy and methodology for assessment and monitoring of Mediterranean small-scale fisheries ArchiMer
Farrugio, Henri; Le Corre, Gildas.
In order to reach a quantitative assessment of the Mediterranean small-scale fisheries one of the main problems is to evaluate in space and time the elementary fishing efforts and yields of every component and their corresponding variations. These elements are essential for the evaluation of global production and fishing effort, the monitoring of which is of paramount interest for the study of the fisheries and exploited resource dynamics. This paper presents a methodology based on the statistical principles of so-called "stratified random sampling" which we have developed in an attempt to solve this problem. The collection of data is achieved in the field by a team of investigators which operates within a space-time stratification of the study area. The...
